London Wolves summer 2014 magazine

Steve’s excellent magazine will be with you soon – it is all ready to go – with just the fixture page being added. Included in this edition – a tribute to Bert and to the record breaking Champions, a review of Wolves Women’s season by “the little blonde one”, pictures from many of Roy’s oustanding social season events, Match Reports including Jody’s brilliant testimonial at Molineux with Craddocks galore on the score sheet (and no Phillips) and see if you can work out which match report carries the perhaps immortal line “(it just goes to show not even God is always ready to give the Pope a helping hand)”.

Frank’s For The Memory

At last, Waggy’s tales of Big Frank is nearly here - the 208-page hard-back publication has none other than Dave Wagstaffe as its author - never before has one Wolves player written a book about another - and is due out in August. Waggy had badgered Frank Munro to tell his story for ages, but, sadly, their passing in the last two years meant it wasn’t completed. However Thomas Publications have taken on the completion and they are adding a special 'In Tribute To Frank' section at the back with subscriber names now being taken for the eagerly-awaited forthcoming biography of Frank Munro.

Frank's For The Memory – a name chosen by Frank and Waggy - was compiled by Waggy as a follow-up to the highly entertaining autobiography he penned several years ago (“Waggy’s Tales”). He was Frank's closest mate both in the Molineux dressing room and following the defender's return from Australia and chatted through his career with him during countless visits to his various homes. David Instone assures us that it's a terrific read - even if Bill McGarry might not have been too impressed with everything in it! – but there are references to London Wolves. He tells us that editor Steve Gordos has kindly agreed to donate his fee to two of the charities close to the duo's heart.

Despite its title, ‘three lions and an anorak’ is not just for anoraks! Competition

Congratulations to Stephen Goodey who won the copy of FIFA14 naming Ryan Green as the youngest Wales player in 1998. Ryan only made 8 appearances for Wolves and is currently at Port Talbot Town. His prize was fulfilled by the high street electronic store Cash Generator.

Football Supporters’ Federation events

AGM The Football Supporters’ Federation and Supporters Direct will host the joint annual Supporters Summit in London, at Wembley Stadium, on 26th July 2014. The event brings fans together from across the UK and Europe, from clubs and supporter organisations, to debate the issues at the heart of the game. Please see our Supporters Summit website for more information on what the day will involve. The AGM’s of both organisations will be held on Friday 25th July at Wembley Stadium (the FSF's takes place at 4.30pm). The FSF appreciate that some members might only want to attend the FSF AGM rather than the full Supporters Summit. Fans to march on Premier League and Football League demanding “Affordable football for all!” on Thursday 14th August 2014. Congratulations to Kenny for (rightly) winning the LMA League 1 manager of the year, although he had to share it with Russell Slade; it did look as though George Gavin seemed a bit intimidated when KJ did the summarising for the first play off semi. Congratulations to the Os and the Millers on their Wembley trip.

June 2014 Newsletter

Steve is preparing a bumper edition with his usual juicy match reports (with slape-quality title puns) which include the highly successful JC6testimonial where Jody’s son Toby scored a winning penalty and Kevin Phillips took his final boos at Molineux as well as the party at Brisbane Road led out by young Tommy. It also features the many recent and excellent social events arranged by Roy and much more. It will be published after the Football League release the Championship fixtures (9:00am Wednesday June 18th).

Geoff writes: Following a pleasant stroll along the Thames last year, we have "Great Expectations" for the Wolves walk this July. Join "Our Mutual Friend" Geoff on a tour of Dickens' London and check out the many places where Charles Dickens lived and worked and used as the basis for many of his novels. There will be MANY opportunities to stop at interesting real ale pubs en-route, not a "Bleak House" among'st them! So, no excuses about being on "Hard Times", come and join us on Saturday 5th July meeting at "The Penderels Oak", 283-288 High Holborn, at 11am - or earlier if you wish as the pub opens at 8am - for a 12 noon start. First, congratulations to Kenny for finishing off an outstanding month by winning the Sky Bet League One manager of the month award. P8 W6 D1 L1 and top all month.

You might recall Robert participating in the pre Bees match video. If anyone is interested in representing London Wolves at a three way session on Easter Saturday or Sunday with Os and Bees before the match on Sky on Easter Monday please let me know.

While we’re on the Os please give the Wolves mascot a special cheer when he leads the team out. When Dave, Stuart and Peter met Rupert from Wolves’ shirt sponsors What House on the train, he said we should do something with the shirts. He very generously allowed us to nominate the mascot for our last “home” match of the season in London. So big applause for John Webb’s grandson Tommy who as a home STH travels up to Molineux for all the home matches as well as many away games (including front row for the 3-0 v The Bees.)

Stef has confirmed that he hasn’t been able to set this up for this year, so we’re sorry for the disappointment of missing out on one of the highlights of the year. LW felt that there might be too much at stake for a social event before Easter Monday.

Mark (@20markf) is planning to join them for the last mile – but would welcome any other London Wolves who can also get to the Mall to welcome them home. (Neil was also planning to run the Paris and London Marathons!) Jody’s testimonial chairman, Jason Guy, arranged this Sporting Dinner with John Hartson in August in aid of Breakthrough Cancer. John himself was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009 and subsequently underwent successful chemotherapy and treatment despite it spreading to his lungs and brain and will be the guest speaker on Thursday 21st August 2014 at the Mount Hotel in Tettenhall, Wolves old players’ favourite haunt, to tell his amazing story. The “supporting” act is some-time Wolf Ian Sludge Lees. If you think you might be interested in attending please book with Roy or Dave. The Allstars won on Sunday 16th March (2:1) raising £4000 for the Birmingham Children’s hospital, including Jody in the line-up. Jason Guy, however, did a Stevie Gerrard, and missed a penalty.

Our very own former Wolves Player ( and Wolves All Star) - Joe Jackson - is organising this great fund raiser for this really worthwhile Inner City Project. This is also to help support a connection with two schools in the Hanover area of Jamaica, where the coaches are visiting later this summer to work and coach the youngsters who are involved in a gang culture.

Following the diagnosis of Lucy Smith (Jason Guy’s partner) of Breast Cancer in May 2013, Jason and Lucy have worked tirelessly to raise funds for ‘Breakthrough Breast Cancer’ who in the words of the Doctor’s at the Nuffield Hospital who are treating Lucy are ‘pioneering in their research for the illness’. Last year Jason and Lucy raised £10,000 and are looking to match the amount this year. Lucy has undergone chemotherapy successfully and now begins an intensive course of radiotherapy.

Wear your shirt for the Bobby Moore fund – Friday 19th April

April is bowel cancer awareness month so let's get together to do something simple and help save lives. Join us on Friday April 11th and wear your football shirt with pride. It doesn't matter who you support, whether your team is top of the league or struggling in the relegation zone just get your football shirt on and make a £2 donation to help beat bowel cancer sooner. We've made great progress in tackling bowel cancer and since the Bobby Moore Fund was established in 1993, mortality rates have fallen by 30%. But we can't stop there as sadly 43 people die of bowel cancer every day in the UK, that's almost 4 football teams. So spread the word and rally your work mates to wear their footie shirts this April. You don't need to be athletic, it doesn't matter what city you live in, united we can raise even more money for pioneering bowel cancer research.

One day we'll make Bobby proud and beat bowel cancer. With your help we can do it sooner.

We were very sad to learn from Stuart’s brother Keith of his death after a short illness on February 3rd. Stuart and Keith have been Wolves supporters since the 50s (starting young!) and London Wolves members for a long time. Stuart and Keith are pictured here at one of their favourite WWLSC events, the Meet the Players, with Seyi George Olofinjana. This was the Glenn Hoddle era, and was just before the Reading match at the Mad Stad when Rohan Ricketts and a young Leon Clarke gained a 2-1 win. Leon was booked after a fracas with the antique Martin Keown, but gained his revenge as hit shot went off Keown for the winner.

Bees fans claim London Wolves fans are scared

The Besotted website team stumbled across London Wolves returning from the Golden Palace when they were on the way back from the Shrews doing us a favour and interviewed “a frightened Wolves fan”. Stuart has been asked to ask if you will support the Coventry fans’ initiatives to return to Coventry rather than play at Sixfields by signing another YouGov petition. Although the direction is a bit out of kilter – the committee oversees the department – it may help to bring attention to the Football Governance Bill due for its first reading in June (Damian Collins MP, Folkestone & Hythe) especially if you write to your MP to seek her/his support to the bill. Signings

You are probably aware that Wolves re-signed striker Nouha Dicko who was on loan with us last season and scored a proper fox-in-the-box goal against Burnley – funny what happens when you play a striker in a striker’s role. Nouha has signed permanently now which is great news – this season on loan at Rotherham he has scored a goal a game. At that rate maybe he can hit his shirt number, 40, this year for us. We met Nouha just before the season ended – he said all he wanted to do was get on the pitch and score.

And, surely if the team live up to his promise, the Wolves Captain for the next ten years, Danny Batth has also signed until 2017. (He signed for us last year!)

Yes, it’s that time of the year again already – and Roy has booked our Christmas lunch. Peter will arrange an early train before the MK Dons match. Details below, including the menu. In the meantime, as you all know, this is Jody Craddock’s testimonial year, and Jody has a very special dinner at Molineux on November 14th, while our raffle at the Christmas lunch will be to support Jody’s charities. You will have noticed there have been some fixture changes. Finally, the Football Supporters’ Federation, of which we are members, are looking for FSF away fan reports, so if you can help and provide reports after any away game please do.


Across the Atlantic for this week's And Finally as LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane shows he's still got it with a "circus-trick" goal. We know this is only on the training pitch but it's still a pretty great artefact of just how skillful the best players are. Impressive stuff...

A brief news – with information from Stan about the U21 match next week on Monday against Arsenal. Wolves also play the JPT first round match v Notts County on Tuesday, which is live on Sky Sports.

Wolves U21 are at the Emirates on Monday 7th October with a 7pm kick off. Doors open 5:30. Tickets are £4 (£2 concessions) and are print-at-home e-tickets generally but there’s a booking fee of £1.20 and a charge of £2 for printing it yourself! Or you can ring them.

We need your help to strengthen the bid to make the Express & Star's photo archive available digitally for free.

If you can spare five minutes of your time to fill out a short survey, we can use your views to ensure the plans meet the needs of the thousands of people we believe would be interested in using a future service.

At present, we have an estimated 750,000 photos stored in our offices. Many of these historic photos are beginning to deteriorate with time.

By giving your views on access, likely levels of usage and the benefit to the community, we can shape the bid to save the photos for future generations.

After an appeal for support was launched in August, more than 150 people and organisations have written in support of the bid.

A brief update on the AGM and other events.

It is possible that the Walsall match at Molineux scheduled for Saturday 7th September will be moved to Tuesday 17th with a 7:45pm kick off. The 7th is an international weekend and WWFC are anticipating there may be enough international call-ups to request a delay. The same may happen to away fixtures at Carlisle and Notts County.

Congratulations to Wolves Women FC for their 5-1 win against the Foxes on Sunday. If you’re staying over after the Gills match don’t forget you’ll be welcome to watch the ladies in action at Castlecroft on Sunday afternoon (2pm ko) against Lewes in a PSF. Jody Craddock #6 Testimonial Year


There’s a chance to join a training session run by Jody Craddock ably assisted by Matt Murray at Compton on Wednesday 4th September at Compton. It costs £149 per person and can be booked through WWFC (see the poster) The event, as does Jody’s other fundraising efforts, supports The Birmingham Children’s Hospital (for Jody’s son Toby) and Balls to Cancer.

AGM Venue / Time change – still Saturday 10th August now at 11:45am in The Lych Gate Tavern

The City Bar is under new management, and undergoing a major refit, which, unfortunately will not now be finished in time for the AGM. The Lych Gate is one of our favourite pubs with a good range of Black Country and guest ales. The London train arrives at 11:11 and we are starting earlier than planned at 11:45 so that you also have time to get food, as the Tavern normally only sells rolls, and also to beat the 1pm rush. The entrance is by St Peter’s Church Lych Gate, on the pedestrian route from Queen Square, by the Barclays Bank, to the subway to Molineux. Stuart looks forward to welcoming you all to the AGM. Peter should have match tickets available after the AGM is concluded.

Travel Change

The Crawley Town match at Molineux has been moved to Friday night 23rd August for Sky with a 7:45pm kick-off and Peter has rebooked trains.

Former and re-joining member Mark Griffiths who runs On The Ball Travel and organises fan flights and trips has also arranged a long weekend for the Preston match with a Friday departure from Molineux and a detour to Blackpool, although you’ll have to be at the Moli before 10am to catch the coach. Mel Eves, in his role as Wolverhampton Rotary President, has also written about a big event on July 17th at the Aldersley Village Centre supporting the Compton Hospice and other Rotary Charities and you can also use it to support a charity of your choosing to “set up” fundraising within an existing event. June 2013-2 London Wolves Newsletter June 2013 + AGM

Attached is your June 2013 edition of the newsletter. Steve reports on the second half of a dismal season for the Club including (but tries to cheer you up with headlines such as “Solsacken” and “Big Time Lewes’ers”). On a happier note though, there were much better times for our sponsored Wolves ladies as well as the enjoyment of Roy’s events in West Sussex, the 1980 League Cup, Dave’s 50th, and events at Molineux. The new season’s fixture list is included while Chairman Earl claims to be spending more on postage than on beer! Steve has had to hold over some material until the Christmas edition when there will be more on the Chairman’s presentation at the Wolves Women end of season event.

Attached is an updated fixture list – apologies for the JPT and Saddlers date errors, and also if you received two copies. Wolves have also announced that the Capital One Cup match at Morecambe will be televised and have also arranged an additional pre-season friendly at East Fife on July 10th with an evening kickoff. Here are the fixtures announced today plus the pre-season schedule and details of a Memorial Day for Jim Heath at St George’s Cricket Club, Telford, on Sunday June 30th (these are available and up-to-date on the fixtures page here )

If you would like to travel to any of the pre-seasons, especially the Real Betis game at Molineux, please contact Peter Woodifield before the end of this month. Match tickets for Real Betis are a tenner or less.

Steve will be publishing the Newsletter very soon – he waited until the fixtures were announced today. Thanks to Roy for finishing off the season in fine style in Sussex – the Newsletter will have pictures of this and of Stuart, Roy, Ruth, and Mark presenting the Wolves Women training tops at their end of season event at Molineux. The ladies consolidated their place in the premier division, while several of the younger teams achieved league and cup doubles – more in the magazine.

You are all probably aware of Waggy’s heart attack earlier in the year. He is now also undergoing chemotherapy which started earlier this month and our best wishes, thoughts and prayers are with him and Val during this very trying year.

London Wolves Walk 2013

Travel from the historic South Bank by shanks’ pony, omnibus, train and boat via the North Bank to a destination towards (and beyond?) the Prime Meridian Line dividing east from west. Plus, for those of us who like a beer or two (too numerous to count), there are many historic hostelries along the way selling beers which will help you walk (Wainwright ale) and keep you seaworthy (Scurvy Ale). First4Staff are holding our first Golf Day, the ‘First4Staff’ Charity Golf Classic on Wednesday 21st August 2013 at Oxley Park Golf Course in Wolverhampton.

The charities that will be benefitting from the day are various Breast Cancer charities (named on the day) and the West Park Rehabilitation hospital.

My partner Lucy was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last month aged 31. We remain positive as the Cancer has been caught at an early stage and she will soon be undergoing treatment and surgery. We will therefore be distributing funds between various local and national Breast Cancer charities to help support others who are diagnosed with this illness.
