League Sun 26 Sep Sunderland 5 Wolves 2  live on Sky Sports

Masonic ref gives Black Cats 2 goal advantage - pen given to them and Doyler denied.   Strikers have to get more clinical - and Doyler definitely needs to go to celebration school after a roll.  Centre backs need some lessons too - listen to Andy Gray.

Sunderland 5 (Bent-pen 8, 90, Jones-pen 47, 70, Turner 73)   Wolves 2 (Mensah-OG 50, Doyle 54)
Little went right for Wolves at The Stadium of Light. They had come back from two down but then conceded three late goals to give Sunderland a flattering 5-2 advantage at the end of an end to end thriller.
Mick McCarthy named the team that had beaten Fulham at Molineux seven days earlier.  Wolves kicked-off attacking the end of the Stadium of Light that housed the travelling supporters and within a minute the game was held up after Darren Bent took a knock, but he was able to resume after treatment. Wayne Hennessey had to head clear a long through ball from just outside his area and Bent fired over the bar as he followed up. A dubious decision by referee Lee Mason led to Sunderland taking an eighth minute lead. Segundo Castillo looked to have won the ball as he tackled Bent in the Wolves box but the official pointed to the spot and Bent slammed the penalty into the corner of the net just out of Hennessey's reach. Wolves won a free-kick on the corner of the home area shortly after the restart but Greg Halford's curing effort was easily fielded by Craig Gordon. Michael Turner was booked for hacking down Kevin Doyle and when George Elokobi's free-kick was cleared, Doyle also saw yellow after an innocuous challenge on Kenwyne Jones. There was the chance of an equaliser in the 25th minute when Dave Edwards connected with Matt Jarvis's cross but the midfielder's glancing header was wide of the mark. Andy Keogh's centre was just too far in front of Edwards as the ball drifted past the far post and then appeals for a Wolves penalty were ignored after Doyle fell under a Turner challenge as they went for Keogh's cross.  Hennessey had to save with his legs after Jones had shrugged off Michael Mancienne's challenge and then Turner cleared after Christophe Berra had headed Jarvis's corner towards goal.  A Mancienne header back lacked the power to reach Hennessey who was alert to the situation racing from his line and blocking as Bent charged in.   Referee Mason further angered the away fans when Karl Henry went into the book after a harmless looking challenge on Lee Cattermole.  In stoppage time all the action was centred in and around the Sunderland box. Both Doyle and Jarvis had shots blocked in a crowded area and then, from a Jarvis free-kick, Doyle glanced a header inches wide.
Half-Time: Sunderland 1 Wolves 0
Michael Kightly replaced Castillo at the start of the second-half whilst Jordan Henderson came on for Cattermole for the Black Cats.  With just a minute gone Sunderland were awarded a second penalty and this time it was a more clear cut decision after Berra had clipped Bent. Jones assumed responsibility and sent Hennessey the wrong way from the spot.  Berra soon atoned as Wolves reduced the deficit in the 50th minute. The defender drove into the left side of the box and hit an angled shot that Craig Gordon could only parry with the ball hitting John Mensah and bouncing back into the net.  Four minutes later and Wolves were level after Gordon palmed away Kieran Richardson's overhit backpass to stop the ball from going in. Sunderland had ten men on the line as Henry slammed the ball towards goal from just six-yards out. Inevitably the ball bounced off a defender's legs but only as far as Doyle who made no mistake. Greg Halford became the third Wolves man to be yellow carded after he had pulled back Richardson. Then Richardson delivered a short cross that hit Bent and drew a diving save from Hennessey. But the Welsh keeper stood little chance as Jones restored Sunderland's lead in the 70th minute. Bent chested the ball into the path of his fellow striker who drilled home a low shot from 22-yards. Three minutes later Hennessey made a fine save from Bent who had cut into the box after beating the offside trap. But the respite was brief as Turner bulleted home a header from the resultant corner which was taken by Andy Reid. It summed up Wolves fortune when Halford's header was cleared off the line by Richardson after Jarvis had lifted a corner into the heart of the home area. There was a double switch for Wolves after 77 minutes with Stefan Maierhofer and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake taking the places of Doyle and Keogh. Edwards struck a fine volley that hit a defender and bounced behind and then an Ebanks-Blake header bounced into Gordon's arms.  In stoppage time Bent rubbed salt into the wounds with a shot that was deflected into the net off Mancienne.

Live From Stadium Of Light

SUNDERLAND: Gordon, Turner, Mensah, Cana, Malbranque, Da Silva, Richardson, Reid, Cattermole, Jones, Bent. SUBS: Fulop, Ferdinand, Nosworthy, McCartney, Henderson, Healy, Campbell.

WOLVES: Hennessey, Halford, Berra, Mancienne, Elokobi, Edwards, Henry, Castillo, Jarvis, Keogh, Doyle. SUBS: Hahnemann, Foley, Craddock, Milijas, Kightly, Maierhofer, Ebanks-Blake.

0: Wolves unchanged from last league game against Fulham. Good reception for Craddock as squads read out.

1: First half chance and it's to Wolves, Doyle flashing a shot wide of the target on just 50 seconds.

3: Hennessey out of his area to head away a through ball but it drops to Bent who's long range effort is off target.

6: Wolves break with Jarvis and although his cross is blocked Keogh gets on the end of it before the ball is cleared. Wolves come back and Edwards wins a corner off Richardson.

7: PENALTY TO SUNDERLAND. Castillo challenges Bent and appears to get something on the ball. But referee Mason awards the penalty.

8: GOAL: 1-0. BENT. bent makes no mistake hammering the penalty into the bottom corner. Harsh on Wolves. Looked like a fair challenge.

11: Wolves try to respond and win a free kick on the left for a foul on Keogh. Halford steps up and gets good power in his effort but it's straight at Gordon.

14: Jones finds Malbranque on the right and his first time shot cannons off Elokobi for a corner. Reid's inswinging corner is punched away well by Hennessey and Wolves clear the second.  Another warm ovation for Craddock as he warms up and Wolves' club captain acknowledges his former club's supporters.

16: Sunderland win a free kick on the right hand side and Reid sends another dangerous ball in but Elokobi is well placed to head the ball away.

20: Turner scythes down Doyle in full flow and collects the first yellow card of the game as a result.

21: Doyle second into the book for pulling back Jones. Definitely a foul but it took the encuragement of the crowd to encourage referee Mason to reach for the card.

23: Reid's cross takes a richochet off Berra and Jones but rolls through to be claimed by Hennessey.

25: So close for Wolves. Doyle is fouled in an aerial challenge with Mensah but referee plays advantage. Edwards feeds Jarvis on the left and then meets his cross with a header which drags wide of the post.

27: Sunderland win a corner and its met by Turner at the far post but the defender's header is across goal and off target. Reid actually almost picks it up having taken the corner but Keogh is in to nick the ball away.

30: Poor backpass from Turner under pressure from Doyle and Gordon's clearance finds touch.  Wolves keep up the pressure and have a big penalty appeal of their own as Doyle goes down under challenge from Turner, Looks as though Turner has come through and flattened Doyle but referee Mason, right on the spot, gives nothing.  Doyle far from happy as the game continues.

33: Now Sunderland go close as Jones gets on the end of through ball from Reid. Hannessey initially bloclks and is then forced into fine acrobatic save from Jones's powerful follow-up with Elokobi completing the clearance.

36: Corner for Wolves which is a good one from Jarvis forcing Turner into a clearing header.

39: Henry into the book for a foul on Cattermole. Been a feisty old tussle so far, and Wolves will feel they have been on the wrong end of the two big decisions in either penalty area.

45: Four minutes added time to follow.

45+2: Doyle wriggles into space again 30 yards out but his attempted shot is blocked.

45+3: Free kick comes in and Doyle is again the man on the spot but his shot on the turn is blocked by Turner. Those two have got previous at that sort of thing this season! Another scramble in the area follows with Richardson blocking a shot from Jarvis.

45+4: Jarvis swings in a free kick which Doyle gets his head to and his effort flashes agonisingly wide. Some good pressure from Wolves at the end of the half but they go in a goal down.

HALF TIME: SUNDERLAND 1-0 WOLVES

46: One change apiece at half time with Kightly on for Castillo for Wolves and Edwards moving into the middle.  Henderson on for Cattermole for Sunderland.

47: PENALTY TO SUNDERLAND. Berra goes into a challenge with Bent and is beaten to the ball, Nailked on penalty this time.

48: GOAL: JONES 2-0.  Bit of discussion as to who is going to take the spot kick and Bent hands the ball to Jones who makes no mistake.

50: GOAL: MENSAH OG 2-1. Wolves thrown a lifeline. Berra does well down the left and fires in a powerful shot which Gordon parries out. But it bounces straight against Mensah and into the net for an unfortunate own goal. Silence for a few seconds as no one seems to know what happened but it doesn't take long for the penny to drop and the Wolves fans at the other end of the pitch start celebrating.

53: Crowd announced. 37, 566.

54: Drama. Richardson gets too much power on a passback forcing Gordon to make a parried save. Referee Mason doesn't appear as if he's going to give the decision but then suddenly blows his whistle. Free kick to Wolves on the six yard line.

55: GOAL: DOYLE 2-2. Henry's free kick is blocked on the line but Doyle rifles home the follow-up. Incredible few minutes and Wolves are level.

57: Halford into the book for a foul on Reid.

59: The tempo is well and truly cranked up and Jones almost gets on the end of a through pass for Sunderland only for Berra to intervene with a well-timed challenge.

65: At the other end Wolves win a corner.  Edwards is unable to get his head to Jarvis's flag kick but Henry keeps up the pressure and feeds Kightly whose attemped through pass is cut out.

66: Reid into the book for a show of dissent having been penalised for a foul on Mancienne.

69: Reid fires in a dangerous cross which bounces back to him off Halford and his second effort, while not hit cleanly, still calls for Hennessey to make a decent save to cling onto the ball.

70: GOAL: JONES 3-2. Wolves were level for a quarter of an hour as Sunderland go back in front. Jones picks up a loose ball and takes a couple of touches before firing a shot across Hennessey and into the far corner of the net.

73: Great save from Hennessey from Bent's left foot drive turning the ball behind for a corner.

73: GOAL: TURNER 4-2. But from Reid's corner Sunderland extend their lead, Turner meeting the delivery with a thumping header giving Hennessey no chance.

75: Change for Sunderland with Da Silva making way for Ferdinand.

75: And Ferdinand quickly into action to block Doyle's cross after a clever pass from Edwards.

76: Corner comes in and is met by a towering Halford header but Richardson clears off the line.

77: Double change for Wolves with Ebanks-Blake and Maierhofer on for Keogh and Doyle.

78: A long Hennessey free kick causes problems in the Sunderland area after Berra wins a header but eventually Jarvis shoots over.

79: Wolves are still going even with the two-goal deficit and Edwards' rising drive is deflected over for a corner.

81: Henry finds Jarvis with a crossfield pass and the winger's cross is met with an Ebanks-Blake header which is gathered cleanly by Gordon.

82: Another goalmouth scramble and Kightly's shot deflected for another corner. Taken short and Kightly's dink is blocked.

85: Now a chance for Sunderland as Bent pulls the ball back for Henderson whose low first time shot is straight at Hennessey.

90: Five minutes to add on added to four in the first half!

90+1: GOAL: 5-2 BENT. Bent makes it five but it took a major deflection off Mancienne. Scoreline now harsh on Wolves.

90+3: Bent is replaced by McCartney.

FULL TIME: SUNDERLAND 5-2 WOLVES

Next Carling Cup Weds 23rd September Man Utd v Wolves live on Sky Sports

Man Utd left back seemed a bit young to have learnt how to cheat but Fabio was deservedly sent off for several attempts to bring Kights down when he was free and through on goal.  1st half our defence looked shaky several times except for Berra.  Hahnemann isn't going to get a first team call up based on this and neither is Dave Jones (apart from one free kick, but two other very poor attempts - Carl Ikemeand Dave Edwards and Castillo are much better bets.  Sylvan starts "back home" at United but gets very little service with the Hof, but Kights looks very lively.  Kevin Foley is back too. Be interesting to see which forward comes on later - Doyler or Keogh?   Ex loan player Gibson started for ManU as didMichael Owen.

UNITED:  Kuszczak, Neville, Brown, Evans, Owen, Carrick, Nani, Wellbeck, Da Silva, Macheda, Gibson. SUBS: Amos, King, Ferdinand, Tosic, Valencia, De Laet, Elkrem.

WOLVES: Hahnemann, Foley, Berra, Craddock, Elokobi, Kightly, Henry, Castillo, Jones, Ebanks-Blake, Maierhofer. SUBS: Ikeme, Hill, Zubar, Milijas, Halford, Keogh, Doyle.

second half

Miljas replaces Castillo at the start of the half

Great chance as Sylvan breaks free but between him and Kights they delay a bit too long and the final cross is headed clear by Wes Brown.   Some great crosses coming in from George Elokobi but Nani's getting a bit too much room against him.  Wolves having much better possession.  Great chance for Karl, but a last minute save. From the corner Utd break. Nani getting a bit petulant.

and the answer is Doyler for SEB pm 65

Immediately Welbeck completely outpaces Christophe Berra and United are 1-0 up.

Brown tries to gift Doyler a goal as he did Kenny Miller in 2004.

And we see the end of Michael Owen.

Kevin Doyle looks  much more dangerous than SEB did.  A slim chance as he's shephered across the box, then another

answer 2 - Kights replaced by Keogh - a good 75 minute run out.  He immediately gets a chance and tamely chips it to the goalie.

Another chase for Keogh from Doyle but Brown is faster than him

Outstanding pass from Doyle to George and back again - Doyler's shot is just wide of the post. (79 mins)

86 Craddock slips to give King a great chance but Berra closes him down. Straight down the other end but Doyler has a Camara shot.

89 Hahnemann get shis body in the way of King's shot

3 minutes of added time.

Hahnemann long free kick has him back peddling as Gibson breaks, ball cleared to Milijas but he's half asleep and Gibson gets another chance.

Karl gets a bit tied up but De Laet has the worst shot ever

That's much Berra - man of the match performance from Christophe Berra, 2 great saves from Wayne and an outstanding Doylers first goal pic Peter Harrington Fulhm001-53bdebut for midfield rock Castillo.  One hour of great football then 30 minutes of nail biting as Fulham eventually woke up.  Fulham manager Roy Hodgson very complementary.   First goal for Doyler from a Greg Halford long throw flicked on by Berra then a great assist by Keogh for a really well taken Dave Edwards goal, and Kights and Sylvan are back. AJ contained by Michael M (even better than Joleon did) as was Zamora by Berra.  Low note:  Michael M has one blemish to give away another goal.  South Bank sits down a lot in response to safety threat appeal.  Billy Quiet just sits down. While Fulham fans just don’t turn up.

Wolves 2 (Doyle 18, Edwards 50)  Fulham 1 (Murphy-pen 66) visit Wolves match report here

Despite a few nervy moments in the closing stages, Wolves deservedly won for the first time at home this season beating Fulham 2-1 thanks to goals from Kevin Doyle, his first for the club, and Dave Edwards.

The Cottagers hit back with a Danny Murphy penalty midway through the second-half but the three points were deposited in the Molineux account at the final whistle.  Mick McCarthy made three changes with Edwards, George Elokobi and Segundo Castillo, who was making his debut, coming in for Matt Hill, Richard Stearman and Nenad Milijaš.  Wolves kicked off attacking the South Bank end and the first goal attempt fell to Doyle who fired wide from 25-yards.  Greg Halford's long throw was headed clear of a crowded area and then a Doyle header drifted wide after Elokobi had pumped a cross into the box as Wolves made the early running.  Doyle won the first corner of the game off Paul Konchesky but Elokobi was penalised for a push as he went for Matt Jarvis's flag kick.  Another long throw from Halford led to Wolves moving into the lead in the 18th minute. Christophe Berra helped on Halford's throw and Doyle ran in to bullet a header into the net.  Doyle ran to the crowd after scoring - an action which earned him a booking before play restarted.  Castillo, who looked to be enjoying his central midfield role, tried his luck with a long range effort which dipped but was wide of the mark.  Jarvis's persistence saw him win the ball John Pantsil and cross. Doyle flicked the ball on with his head but it went behind both Edwards and Andy Keogh before being cleared.  With 32 minutes on the clock Fulham made their first real threat on Wayne Hennessey's goal as Bobby Zamora cut in from the left and hit an angled shot that went behind off Michael Mancienne. Murphy's overhit corner went out for a throw on the far side.  Just before the break Keogh found the back of the net but was offside as he ran onto Halford's through pass. At the other end Elokobi ran across and made a last ditch challenge to save the day as Clint Dempsey broke clear.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 Fulham 0

Seconds after the resumption Andy Johnson needed attention after being accidentally caught on the head by Berra as he attempted to clear. Wolves went two up the 50th minute following a move started and finished by Edwards. He pushed a pass forward to Keogh and was in position to take a squared return pass from the Irish striker. Edwards beat Mark Schwarzer a cracking shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.  Brede Hangeland, under pressure from Jarvis, played Schwarzer in trouble with a back pass and the keeper only just managed to clear as Edwards charged in. As the pace of the game heated up, Hennessey was quickly of his line to save at close range from Johnson.  Aaron Hughes had Schwarzer to thank when he headed a Keogh cross towards his own goal, the Australian managing to deflect the ball onto the bar to save his team-mate's blushes.  Then a Schwarzer booted clearance fell to Castillo 35-yards out. The Ecuadorian immediately planted a shot back towards goal but the keeper had returned to his line and he gathered comfortably.  Hennessey, with a fine diving save, managed to parry a fierce drive from Dickson Etuhu and when Johnson latched onto the loose ball he was flagged offside.  Fulham were enjoying their best spell of the game and after Zamora's first touch had let him down as he tried to control Johnson's through ball, Damien Duff screwed an angled shot wide of the far post.  But, in the 66th minute, the visitors reduced the deficit when Mancienne pulled back Zamora in front of goal. Murphy sent Hennessey the wrong way from the spot.  Stefan Maierhofer replaced Edwards shortly afterwards and he had been on the pitch for less than a minute when he volleyed over the bar after controlling a cross from Jarvis.  Fulham also made changes with former Albion men Jonathan Greening and Diomansy Kamara replacing Konchesky and Etuhu respectively. Then Sylvan Ebanks-Blake joined the fray when he went on for Doyle. There was a let off for Wolves following Duff's free-kick. The home defence charged out but there was no flag and after both sides hesitated Zamora half hit a shot that went through to Kamara. Hennessey blocked but the ball spun towards goal with Elokobi running back to steer it behind for a corner.  Michael Kightly went on in place of Jarvis for the last five minutes and there were bookings for Pantsil and Halford as the seconds ticked away.

Fulham piled forward in the four minutes of stoppage time but the home defence were in no mood for any slip ups.

Sat 12 Sep Blackburn 3 Wolves 1 The Hof

"Mick McCarthy probably has an idea now of which players won't make it in the Premier League" Robbie Dennison post match.

At least it wasn't 5:1, mainly thanks to Wayne. But did Mick cut off his nose to spite his face because George Elokobi was late for the team meeting! Strong debut from Stefan Maierhofer. Abject defending throughout as Michael Mancienne is played out of position to accommodate Berra, and awful pass from Karl for their first, while MM stationary for  the second and Cardiff ref gives offside goal and denies pen at 1-0 - although Hill very lucky also not to give a pen away.

Blackburn Rovers 3 (Diouf 19, Roberts 56, Dunn 64)  Wolves 1 (Maierhofer 87)

Wolves were second best at Ewood Park as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat against a Blackburn side that had taken just a single point going into the game. The only consolation for the visitors came in the shape of a late goal from debutant Stefan Maierhofer.  There were two changes to the Wolves starting line up with Matt Hill coming in at left-back for George Elokobi and Christophe Berra replacing the injured Jody Craddock in central defence.

Rovers included two former Molineux men in their side - Keith Andrews and Jason Roberts. Wolves kicked-off defending the Darwin End which had 3,000 travelling fans packed into the upper tier. The home team started strongly winning a corner after just 14 seconds after Roberts's attempted cross cannoned behind off Berra. Andy Keogh headed clear Morten Gamst Pedersen's flag-kick. Wolves were close to taking a sixth minute lead after Paul Robinson failed to gather Matt Jarvis's deep free-kick. The ball broke to Berra who turned but was wide with his shot. Roberts looked to be on for an opening goal after David Dunn had raced past two defenders and slipped a short through pass to the striker. He was about to shoot with just Wayne Hennessey in front of him but Hill got in a superb last ditch challenge to win the ball. With 18 minutes gone Richard Stearman played the ball to Keogh in the home box. He beat his marker but then fell and completely missed his kick as he attempted a shot. Just seconds later, Blackburn took the lead. Michael Mancienne lost out in the centre circle to El-Hadji (ed - from Karl's back pass) Diouf who raced clear and hit a shot that Hennessey got a leg to but couldn't keep out. A cheer from the away support was cut short five minutes later as Berra put the ball past Robinson with the referee having spotted an infringement in the home area. Hennessey was called into action when he turned behind a Pedersen free-kick from wide on the right, then the Welsh keeper made a great save to block from Andrews who had burst through onto Dunn's through ball. Andrews volleyed wide shortly afterwards and then, in stoppage time, Pedersen hit the outside of the near post with a 20-yard free-kick. Wolves won a corner just before the whistle for half-time and when Nenad Milijaš planted the ball into the middle it fell to Jarvis who shanked his shot allowing a defender to clear.

Half-Time: Rovers 1 Wolves 0

Mick McCarthy made two changes following the break with Maierhofer and Dave Edwards coming on for Milijaš and Greg Halford.  Maierhofer almost made an instant impact with a drive from 25-yards that wasn't far wide of Robinson's right-hand post. Wolves were enjoying their best spell of the game in the minutes that followed and Robinson was in trouble after he could only help a Kevin Doyle cross on to Jarvis whose centre was headed goalwards by Stearman but fielded by the Blackburn keeper. Rovers went two up in the 56th minute when Gael Givet's header, following a corner from Dunn, was helped on into the net by Roberts.  Berra had to race across to clear as Roberts threatened after he had shook off Mancienne. But the respite was brief as Dunn converted a third home goal with 64 minutes gone. Hennessey made a good save from Roberts but Dunn raced in to tuck the ball over the line. Stearman's complaint to the linesman that the Rovers man was offside only resulted in a yellow card.  Doyle forced an athletic save from Robinson with a 20-yard drive and, from the resultant corner which was taken by Jarvis, Maierhofer's header was blocked by a defender just in front of the line.  Hennessey was penalised for hands after he caught the ball but fell outside the area. Andrews lifted the free-kick over the wall and the Wolves keeper had to dive full length to push the ball away.  Substitute Brett Emerson delivered a low cross that saw Stearman and Roberts tussling for the ball in the heart of the area but Rovers penalty appeals were waved away by the referee.  With three minutes left Keogh was denied a goal by Givet who deflected away a fierce close range shot after Jarvis had supplied the centre.  Jarvis took the corner that followed and after Maierhofer had chested the ball down, the Austrian lashed it into the roof of the net from inside the six-yard box.

Rovers: Robinson (capt), Jacobsen (Salgado 85), Samba (Nelsen 75), Givet, Dunn, Roberts, Grella, Pedersen (Emerton 74), Andrews, Diouf, Chimbonda. Unused subs: Brown, Kalanic, Hoillett, De Santo.

Wolves: Hennessey, Stearman, Hill, Milijaš (Edwards 45), Mancienne, Berra, Halford (Maierhofer 45), Henry (capt), Doyle (Surman 78), Keogh, Jarvis.Unused subs: Hahnemann, Elokobi, Jones, Vokes. Bookings: Stearman (64 - dissent), Berra (85 - foul).

Referee: S. Bennett.  Attendance: 24,845.

Mick McCarthy admitted Wolves can't afford to concede goals in the manner they did against Blackburn after this afternoon's 3-1 defeat at Ewood Park.

Despite a bright start to both halves of the game Wolves were undone by goals from El-Hadji Diouf, Jason Roberts and David Dunne with substitute Stefan Maierhofer's late strike on his debut a mere consolation.

"It's very disappointing," said the boss.

"We started the game reasonably well and had probably the best chance.  But when we give the ball away in the middle of the park and let Diouf run through one-on-one with the keeper it's likely to end in tears which it did.  It changes the whole course of the game and then they have a spell.  We got away with it when they hit the post just before half time but started the second half well.  We have a chance and maybe a penalty appeal but then we don't defend from a corner kick and concede another goal and not many teams come back from going two down at this level.  We kept going and got one back but there aren't many positives when you come away and lose 3-1 and I'm not looking for anything to brighten my evening up.  What I would say is that Wayne Hennessey had a particularly good game making some fine saves."

Stefan's impact as a half time substitute was another of those positives as he went close with a header and a shot as well as the late close range finish from a corner.  "Stefan came on and caused problems for them physically," said Mick.  "He had a couple of touches when he gave the ball away but when you bear in mind he trained with us for about an hour yesterday he did very well. There are a lot of strikers who play in the Premier League and never score a goal and he's got one in 45 minutes and could have got a couple of others.  He'll be judged on his goals but he also worked hard, putting himself about and did all the things I'd expect of a striker, as well as getting his goal."

Mick meanwhile also explained the absence of George Elokobi from the starting line-up for today's game. "George and Ronald Zubar turned up late for the team meeting before the game," he said. "George would have been playing and Ronald would have been on the bench but if you're late you don't play - simple as that.  They miss the game but if there's one high point from that then I thought Matty Hill was excellent at left back."
