Sat 29th Aug Wolves 1 (Stearman 46) Hull (Geovanni 3)

Wolves 1 (Stearman 46)  Hull 1 (Giovanni 3)

Stears (after the first 10 mins) and Mancienne were men of the match; Kevin Doyle made an impressive home league full debut (but where was the hat trick against Hull).  Mick was right - we should have won it but another abject miss from Andy Keogh, and otherwise good defending handling far from excellent attacking left a fair result.   Coupled with a strange decision from Mick not to bring on Sam Vokes until the 89th and not using the midfield power he had on the bench!  Defence again shaky - Hunt should never have been allowed to get the cross in and Geo was unmarked.  For ten minutes in the second half after Stears' goal we had them on the rack, but midfield lost control.  Even Seyi George looked top notch in comparison. Milijaš will get better if he has the time to improve - hopefully.  Stephen Hunt had a good solid booing from Molineux, a very good 15 minutes and was then schackled by George Elokobi when he went right and by Stears on the left until he gave up.  Hull started time wasting immediately after scoring, which the ref acknowledged but promptly ignored until the 81st minute. Jarvo was busy but ineffectual - needing too many touches, while Keogh had an ok game other than his awful miss when clean through (74th) - he really didn't seem to know what to do.  Let's hope SEB, big CHris and Kights get back soon.  Thanks to Hull for kicking off the other way, we got two goals at the South Bank for a change!

Wolves reported

After conceding an early goal Wolves battled back to take a point from their Molineux meeting with Hull City. Richard Stearman grabbed the leveller seconds after the interval and although they had the chances to win it, in the end Mick McCarthy's team had to be satisfied with a point.   It was all change again for the home starting line-up with only George Elokobi having started in the midweek Carling Cup tie against Swindon Town. In the City team was former Molineux midfielder Seyi Olofinjana.

Set to defend the South Bank end, Wolves made an awful start to the game falling behind after just three minutes. It all began brightly enough with a concerted attack from the kick-off ending with Matt Jarvis's shot in the Hull box being blocked.  Almost immediately City took the lead as Stephen Hunt cut in from the left to the by-line and is cross was headed in from two-yards out by Geovanni Gomez.  Jarvis had another effort blocked, by Michael Turner, and then, in the eighth minute, Steven Mouyokolo was booked for kicking the ball away after fouling Kevin Doyle. Greg Halford's free-kick was cleared. Two corners from Nenad Milijaš proved to be fruitless and when Hull went forward again Michael Mancienne had to clear a dangerous cross from Kamel Ghilas.  A foul by Olofinjana on Doyle led to a free-kick but when Karl Henry floated the ball into the area, Andy Keogh's glancing header went wide. Hull could have had a second with 19 minutes gone. Hunt's corner went through to Ghilas at the far post but Wayne Hennessey was perfectly positioned to gather the City man's powerful header.  Matt Jarvis used his speed in a run down the left flank before he delivered a low cross that was gathered by Keogh who turned and shot into the arms of Boaz Myhill.  City skipper Turner, who was having a fine game in visiting defence, headed away a Milijaš cross as Doyle lay in wait behind him.  Just before the break Keogh fired a shot into the side netting with Myhill keeping a watchful eye on the ball.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Hull 1

Just 42 seconds after the restart Wolves were on level terms after Mancienne had pumped a free-kick from the halfway line into the box. Jody Craddock nodded the ball on to Stearman who drove the ball into the roof of the net with the outside of his right foot (pictured on ;inr here http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10307~47361,00.html).   Olofinjana, with a well timed tackle, denied Doyle a shooting opportunity and when Halford's long throw fell to Jarvis his cross was met by whose header lacked the power to trouble Myhill. After two Milijaš corners Hull broke and a great piece of defensive work from Jarvis halted Giovanni's progress as he was about to run into Hennessey's area. Jarvis had sprinted from the Hull box the length of the field to thwart the Brazilian.  Myhill took a header from Keogh after a Jarvis cross and then Craddock headed over after a good piece of work from Stearman on the right wing.  Wolves should have been ahead in the 74th minute when Elokobi's through ball split the City defence as Keogh beat the offside trap. But with just Myhill to beat, and from an angle, the striker dragged the ball wide of the far post. (ed AWFUL)  Five minutes later Turner rescued his side with a goal-line clearance. Giovanni fouled Stearman to the right of the area and when Milijaš floated over the free-kick, Craddock headed on to Doyle who beat Myhill only for Turner to block.  Stearman fired wide from the 18-yard line after he had latched onto a half clearance and, in stoppage time, substitute Sam Vokes missed the chance of scoring a dramatic winner.  The tireless Doyle floated an inch perfect pass into the path of Jarvis but Vokes, who had only been on the field for a matter of three minutes, misdirected his header wide from the winger's cross.

Tuesday 25th August Wolves 0 Swindon 0 (AET) ( Pens 6:5) Carling Cup

Billed as the game where the second stringers could stake their claims for starting places, no-one other than young #44 Nathaniel Mendez-Laing seemed interested in that apart from perhaps George Elokobi playing in the advanced role on the left for 80 minutes  and Ronnie Zubar in the centre.  The malaise even caught Keogh and Jarvo when they came on - at least they livened it up for 10 minutes.  Who looked most likley to score? - only the forgotten Neill Collins who is on the transfer list - unfortunately Neill made as many mistakes as good moves.  Overall match summary - turgid.  Not worth the tenner.  Suggestion from another STH - have the penalty shoot out first then we could have avoided wasting two hours.  And a word of consolation too for arguably Swindon’s best player - captain and centre back Gordon Greer - playing with a head wound and easily containing our strikers  - but who missed his penalty to send us through.  We nearly joined in with the very large and vocal travelling fans in “Premier League, you’re having a laugh” who didn’t deserve to go back to Swindon beaten.

WoW were a bit more positive

After 120 minutes of goalless football Wolves progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup after a 6-5 penalty shoot-out triumph over League One's Swindon Town.

The Wiltshire side hit the woodwork three times as they were spurred on by a large following but, in the end, skipper Gordon Greer smacked his penalty against a post after 11 successful kicks and it was the Molineux side that went through.
Mick McCarthy made 11 changes to his starting line up with three players, Marcus Hahnemann, Ronald Zubar and 17-year-old Academy scholar Nathaniel Mendez-Laing all making their debuts.  Some nifty footwork from Kevin Doyle almost led to Wolves taking a third minute advantage but after sprinting into the area he was inches wide of the far post with a low shot.  Mendez-Laing gave the crowd a glimpse of his skills with a run that took him past three defenders. He laid the ball off for George Elokobi who charged in from the left and hit a terrific shot that bounced behind off Kevin Amankwaah.
Just a minute later it was Mendez-Laing again - this time with a 20-yard shot that was arrowing for the top corner of the net until David Lucas pulled off a fine fingertip save.  In the 21st minute Mendez-Laing and Doyle combined to set up an opening for Neill Collins who took the ball to the edge of the box before hitting a shot that, although it had plenty of power behind it, went straight into the keeper's arms.   Two Anthony McNamee crosses from the right in quick succession caused problems for the home defence. The first flew dangerously through the six-yard box and then the next fell to Temitope Obadeyi who, from just two yards out, hit a first-time angled shot that went out for a throw in near the corner flag.   Mendez-Laing turned his marker in the box but failed to connect properly allowing Lucas to field the ball before McNamee clipped the top of Hahnemann's crossbar after he had cut into the Wanderers box.  A minute before the break Town thought they had taken the lead. Obadeyi hit a cross-shot from the right that struck the base of the far post. Billy Paynter tucked away the rebound but he was stood in an offside position.   In stoppage time Elokobi crossed to Sam Vokes who had his back to goal and lost possession as he tried to turn.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Town 0

The first chance of the second period fell to Obadeyi but his effort from the edge of the area went over the bar.  There was little else in the way of goalmouth action before Wolves made a double switch with Andy Keogh replacing Doyle and Matt Jarvis taking over from Mendez-Laing.   Almost immediately a Jarvis corner was headed powerfully over the bar by Collins and seconds later Keogh was only just off target from 25-yards.  Swindon substitute Mark Marshall hit the outside of the near post with a low cross although Hahnemann looked to have his goal covered.   After Dave Edwards had replaced Elokobi, Dave Jones drew a routine save from Lucas with a 20-yard drive after Keogh had helped on a Jarvis centre.   Vokes headed over following another Jarvis cross and, just after Paynter was booked for kicking the ball away, Keogh lobbed the ball inches over the bar after Lucas had closed him down as the pair went for Zubar's through ball.  In stoppage time Amankwaah was booked for tripping Jarvis and Keogh hooked wide of the far post.   Extra-time began with a fierce Edwards shot that was taken by Lucas, and Jarvis sent a bouncing shot the wrong side of the post.  For Swindon, Marshall headed wide after Lloyd Macklin had crossed and Keogh's angled drive was saved by the diving Lucas.
There were two bookings in the second period of extra-time - both of them for Wolves players. Zubar was harshly yellow carded for a midfield challenge and Hahnemann was cautioned after he tripped Alan O'Brien to the side of the home area.   But the deadlock couldn't be broken and the game went to penalties with Andy Surman successfully beginning the proceedings.

All six of the home takers, Surman, Jones, Edwards, Keogh, Vokes and Collins were on target and the first five Town men, Kennedy, Marshall, Easton, Macklin and Lucas also hit the mark.  But the defining moment came when Greer's shot beat Hahnemann but rebounded off the post.

Wolves: Hahnemann, Collins, Hill, Surman, Berra (capt), Zubar, Mendez-Laing (Jarvis 62), Jones, Doyle (Keogh 62), Vokes, Elokobi (Edwards 79).  Unused subs: Stearman, Henry, Ikeme, Spray.  Bookings: Zubar (108 - foul), Hahnemann (115 - foul).

Sat 22nd Aug Manchester City 1 Wolves 0

There's a rumour that Adebayor is going to change his name to missalot, while Brazilian Robinho will change to cantscorefortoffee. At least the arrival of Joleon Lescott at Man City for at least 17-20 million less than Wolves sold him for was delayed until after this match. But we will see him at Molineux for Christmas.

Man City should have sewn this up in the first half but Wayne was often in the right place for them to shoot right at him. With 65% possession, the Ł200m force compared favourably with a team that cost about 10% of that. But for several periods in the second half when Mick abandoned the 4-5-1 and went back to a shape that better suited attacking Wolves were on top - and we ended up with 3 strikers on. London Wolves sponsored George Elokobi made his premiership debut for the second half, and showed Shaun Wright-Phillips what a real left back could do! Andy Keogh could have continued his magic start to the season but hit the bar. Jarvo was clean through and forced an excellent save from Shay Given... Matt Le Tissier on Sky Sports thought Wolves showed some real promise, echoed by Robbie Dennison on the Beacon commentary. Down to 13th.

Manchester City 1 (Adebayor 17) Wolves 0

Although Manchester City wasted chances to kill off the game after Emmanuel Adebayor's 17th minute goal, Wolves made the Premier League's big spenders fight all the way and after Andy Keogh had smacked a shot against the bar it was the home fans that were baying for the final whistle at the end. Wolves were unchanged for the trip to the City of Manchester Stadium and they kicked-off defending the end of the ground that housed a sell out 2,800 travelling support. Keogh's shove on Gareth Barry presented the former Villa midfielder with the opportunity of planting an early free-kick into the Wolves box. Adebayor headed the ball on but Wayne Hennessey jumped high to collect. Greg Halford's long throw was helped on by Jody Craddock but the ball went beyond the reach of Keogh who dragged a shot wide moments later. Stephen Ward had to concede a corner to prevent Micah Richards from getting in a cross and Halford headed clear Barry's flag-kick. Michael Mancienne cleared a dangerous cross from Carlos Tévez but the Argentinean played a part as City took a 17th minute lead with the first on target shot of the game. Wayne Bridge's centre from the left dropped to Tévez and he quickly laid the ball in front of Adebayor who turned and beat Hennessey with a low shot inside the near post. A foul by Dave Edwards on Shaun Wright-Phillips led to another Barry free-kick, this time from 25-yards, but his effort went straight into the arms of Hennessey. Stephen Ireland laid a Wright-Phillips cross into the path of Adebayor and although he connected well with a first-time shot, Hennessey didn't have to move his feet to claim. The Welsh keeper was then forced to make three saves in a two minute spell. First he took an angled shot from Robinho and then he made a similar stop from the Brazilian after Adebayor had carved an opening. City continued to press and after Richard Stearman had been booked for a challenge on Robinho, just outside the area, Tévez hit the free-kick into the wall and latched onto the rebound firing through a crowded area and forcing a diving save from Hennessey. In the 32nd minute Hennessey tipped over a cross-shot from Robinho before a rare Wolves attack saw Edwards shooting over the bar from 20-yards out. Then, five minutes before the break, Shay Given made a tremendous save to turn behind Matt Jarvis's long range shot that was destined for the top corner. Tévez wasted a good chance when he headed wide from Barry's centre and the half ended with a Keogh shot into the side netting although Given looked to have the ball covered.

Half-Time: City 1 Wolves 0

Twice in the opening minutes of the new half, Keogh centres were too high for his team-mates and then interval substitute George Elokobi, on for Halford, took the ball off Wright-Phillips as the winger threatened to burst through. Kevin Doyle also came on at the break in place of Nenad Milijaš. Ireland flicked the ball wide in a one on one with Hennessey after he had run onto Robinho's through ball, and Adebayor volleyed over after he had been set up once again by Tévez. Stearman headed a yard wide of the far post after a cross from Jarvis and then, at the other end, Adebayor broke through as he ran onto a pass from Ireland. But his touch let him down as he skipped past the Wolves keeper and, from a tight angle, he could only find the side netting. Midway through the half the woodwork denied the tireless Keogh the goal his work rate deserved. Kolo Touré and Doyle tussled for possession in the Wolves area and when the ball broke to Keogh he smashed a volley from the edge of the box that hit the underside of the bar and bounced to safety. Wolves were enjoying a purple patch and Given had to push a driven centre from Elokobi behind at the near post. From another Elokobi centre Stearman's header was taken by Given before Mick McCarthy made his final change with Sam Vokes going on for Ward who had pushed up into midfield after the introduction of Elokobi. Craig Bellamy, a City replacement for Tévez, just failed to get his outstretched foot to Robinho's low cross but Wolves finished the game strongly piling forward in search of an equaliser. A driven cross from Jarvis was just too far in front of Doyle and Stearman and the game reached its conclusion as Stearman headed over following an Elokobi centre. At the end the Molineux supporters, whose backing throughout the game had been tremendous, gave their team a standing ovation.

Tue 18th Aug Wigan Athletic 0  Wolves 1 (Keogh 6)

M090818 Wigan scoreboarden of the match - Andy Keogh and Karl Henry.  Andy had his best game for Wolves scoring his 50th career goal while Karl totally blocked Wigan’s playmaker Gomez. Andy scored in the 6th - should have scored in the 3rd and won a nailed on(quote Mick) penalty but poor ref Jones booked Andy instead of Titus Bramble (remember him - the dirty **** who crocked two Wolves strikers in a pre-season friendly?). Timely subs from Mick kept the pressure on Wigan although Jason Scotland should also have won a penalty.

Wolves first ever away win in the Premiership;  Mick's third win ever in the Premiership; Andy Keogh's 50th career goal... up to 11th!  - statto's delight, with Wolves more than hanging on for 90 more minutes after scoring with a great header by Andy Keogh from Nenad Milijaš free kick - he'd already hit the crossbar - and was also brought down for a nailed-on penalty (unless you're an awful ref named Jones, who even booked Andy when he was fouled by the thug who had already crocked two Wolves attackers Titus Bramble). Ref Jones also missed elbows and other tackles while Wolves again wasted a load of chances. Three front line strikers are now crocked, but 4:5:1 worked well with Dave Edwards running the support line for Andy Keogh and Nenad Milijaš impressing again

Phil Thompson on Sky Sports praised Andy, Karl Henry for totally neutralising Wigan's playmaker Gomez, and Mick's tactical changes as Nenad tired and David Jones came on, then Sammy on 81,  Drew Surman had already replaced Greg Halford.090818 WWLSC at Wigan

Wigan Athletic 0 Wolves 1 (Keogh 6)

Though they had to withstand heavy pressure late on, Wolves were full value for their first ever away victory in the Premier League as Andy Keogh's early goal proved to be the deciding factor against Wigan at The DW Stadium.

With Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Foley both unfit, Richard Stearman and Dave Edwards were drafted into the side with Keogh playing as a lone striker supported by Matt Jarvis and Greg Halford. On the bench was 16-year-old Academy striker James Spray.  A foul by Keogh on Jason Koumas near the left-hand corner flag with just two minutes gone provided the first moment of danger for the visiting defence. Koumas took the free-kick and Wayne Hennessey's punch dropped to Jordi Gomez who shot woefully wide from 20-yards.  Keogh was much closer with Wolves' first goal attempt with his shot from the left of goal hitting the inside of the far post before bouncing to safety.  But Wigan weren't so lucky in the sixth minute as Wolves moved into the lead. Nenad Milijaš floated over a free-kick from the left and Keogh's glancing header went in of the base of the same post that had denied moments earlier. Koumas had a chance to level when he ran into the left of Hennessey's area but his drive was well wide of the far post.  Mario Melchiot had to react quickly and concede a corner to prevent Jarvis having a free run on goal. From Milijaš's flag-kick Keogh headed on to Halford who hooked the ball over from eight-yards.  Chris Kirkland dived low to save after another Milijaš corner had been flicked on by Halford. The ball struck Jody Craddock and bounced towards the goal forcing a smart reaction from the keeper. A Hendry Thomas free-kick from 30-yards went straight through to Hennessey and Halford's rising drive from a similar distance at the other end wasn't too far over the angle.  After Charles N'Zogbia's shot took a deflection off Stephen Ward, with the ball looping uncomfortably close to the bar, Koumas's corner resulted in a scramble with Hugo Rodallega running in to hit a low shot that bounced clear off a defender's legs. N'Zogbia looked to have fouled Ward as he ran through on goal but Hennessey managed to block and, as Wigan kept up the pressure, Ward came to the rescue with a last ditch tackle at the far post after Hennessey lost a cross and N'Zogbia looked odds on to proper.

Half-Time: Wigan 0 Wolves 1

Stearman's challenge on Koumas resulted in a free-kick near the left hand corner of the visitors area but Rodallego's curling shot was safely gathered by Hennessey.  Seconds after David Jones was introduced as a 56th minute replacement for Milijaš, Wolves were the victims of an appalling piece of refereeing by Mike Jones. Keogh clearly had his ankles clipped by Titus Bramble as he ran into the Wigan box for a clear penalty. But the official, who was perfectly placed, waved away the appeals and then, to add insult to injury, booked the Irishman for diving.  Andrew Surman became Wolves' second substitute when he went on for Halford and when his 68th minute cross was headed out to Jones, the midfielder fired over the bar from the edge of the box.  Stearman went into the book for a challenge on N'Zogbia and then, when Paul Sharner tried his luck from 30-yards, Hennessey needed two attempts to gather as the home forwards raced in.  With 15 minutes remaining the travelling supporters held their breath after Karl Henry's penalty box challenge on Jason Scotland but again the referee shook his head.  Scott Sinclair and Melchiot combined to open up a chance for Rodallega but his shot was deflected wide and then Ward was hurt as he cleared a Scotland cross that had flew dangerously through the six-yard box.  With time running out Sinclair powered a header inches wide after Gomez had crossed and, in stoppage time, Edwards was booked for pulling back N'Zogbia. The Wanderers rearguard chased out as the free-kick was planted into the box but the flag stayed down and with the goal at his mercy Sharner shot wide. Seconds later, to the delight of the 4,000 fans packed into the visitors end of the stadium, the final whistle blew to signal a fully deserved win for Mick McCarthy's men.

It was the first top flight victory away from Molineux since January, 1984.

Sat 15th Aug Wolves 0 West Ham United 2

Subtitled "Captain Calamity".   It's five years since we last kicked off in the Premier League.  Captain Craddock certainly hasn't got any faster or much wiser.   Playing like he did  this time last year which was halted by an injury and then a loan move to Stoke, he was too slow, and apart from one goal line clearance with Hennessey beaten was at the centre of a very poor defensive performance.   Kevin Foley (also with a goal line clearance after a clumsy slip from Craddock) seemed confused by the presence of Greg Halford who made an impressive debut an faded when their positions were swapped.  Stephen Ward was good going forward and supporting Jarvis but had a few too many "Naylor moments" giving Kieron Dyer far far too much space.  Once he got close enough to tackle he did well and Jarvis got back better to help out.   The return of Mancienne (subbed with Stearman) certainly helped our performance.  And Wayne made some terrific saves, commanding his area (apart from the second goal) in Murray style.

Overall - a gung ho performance marred by poor shooting, SEB and Jarvo, awful defending (Craddock and Ward), an outstanding debut from Nenad Milijaš who was denid by a man of the match performance from England #1 (formerly #6) Robert Green.  The crowd was at it's best.  We need Stears and Mancienne paired until Ronnie Zubar is up to speed, and Elokobi in at left back.

Mick said there were no surprises in this - at least we only lost by 2 not 5.  Thanks to the Lescott fiasco, we're not bottom.

Wolves 0   West Ham United 2 (Noble 22, Upson 69)

Whilst they were never outplayed, Wolves lost out on their return to the top flight as West Ham scored at the midway point of both halves. But Mick McCarthy's men made the Hammers fight for the points and it wasn't a biased view in the Pressbox that Wolves were worth a point from the game.  (ed: apart from the defending and shooting!!)

Nenad Milijaš and Greg Halford were the men making their debut for Wolves whilst there was a welcome return from Chelsea for on loan defender Michael Mancienne.   Before the game new Vice president Robert Plant was introduced to the crowd and then there was a minute's applause in memory of the late Sir Bobby Robson.  The noise inside the stadium was incredible as West Ham kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and inside the first minute the visitors defence was tested when Halford launched a long throw into the box.  The Hammers responded with a Mark Noble cross that Carlton Cole laid back to Jack Collison whose low shot was saved by Wayne Hennessey Robert Green did well to take a Halford centre with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Andy Keogh lying in wait and when play switched to the other end Julien Faubert's low cross flew dangerously through the six-yard box and past the far post for a goal kick  In the 13th minute a great piece of defensive work from Matthew Upson almost certainly prevented an opener for Wolves. Halford headed Stephen Ward's cross back into the heart of the area where Keogh was about to pull the trigger until the West Ham skipper threw himself in to clear.  Seconds later Ebanks-Blake got underneath Matt Jarvis's cross and his header went high over the bar.  Keogh shot over the angle from just outside the area after Milijaš and Ebanks-Blake had created the opportunity and then James Collins blocked Jarvis's angled shot after the winger had cut into the box.  After absorbing Wolves' pressure West Ham took the lead in the 22nd minute with their first on target attempt. Luis Jimenez squared a pass to Noble who picked his spot from 22-yards to beat Hennessey all ends up.  There was a chance for Jarvis to level matters seven minutes later but he hurriedly drove over the bar as he was closed down by a defender.  But Wolves were fortunate not to concede a second after Cole had beat the offside trap. The striker's touch took him away from goal but he still had only Hennessey to beat. His shot bounced off the keeper's legs to Noble whose low shot was kicked off the line by Jody Craddock.  From Noble's corner Hennessey had to tip Herita Ilunga's powerful header over the bar. Still the danger hadn't passed and from Noble's next flag-kick there was a tremendous scramble before Karl Henry blocked and the ball was cleared.  Before the break Halford was too high with a long distance shot and Milijaš saw his shot deflected narrowly wide after Ward had played the ball back to him.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 West Ham 1

Just 20 seconds after the restart a fantastic save from Green denied Milijaš whose dipping shot was destined for the back of the net until the England keeper athletically turned it over. From Milijaš's corner the ball was half cleared to Jarvis on the edge of the area. He struggled to control it but Halford ran in to hit a first time shot that saw Green at his best again as he dived to push the ball away.  Kevin Foley came to the rescue in the 53rd minute after Craddock had miscued a clearance leaving Collison in the clear. He rounded Hennessey and rolled the ball goalwards but Foley popped up on the line to clear.  Milijaš shot inches over the bar after connecting with a low Jarvis cross and Green saved with his legs after Ebanks-Blake burst through after Keogh and Milijaš had dissected the West Ham defence.  Ilunga and Foley both needed treatment after a nasty clash of heads. Foley was able to return but the Hammers man was led from the pitch clearly dazed to be replaced by Jonathan Spector.  In the 69th minute West Ham grabbed a killer second when, from Noble's corner, Upson headed home.  Having used all of their substitutes, Wolves had to play out the final ten minutes with ten men after Ebanks-Blake limped off with a hamstring injury.  West Ham almost scored a third when they broke and Scott Parker squared the ball to the unmarked Jimenez who shot straight at Hennessey.  In the final minute Faubert fouled Jarvis just to the side of the visitors box. Halford lifted the free-kick to the far post where substitute Richard Stearman's header was turned behind by Green to deny Wolves a consolation.

Sat 8th Aug Friendly Wolves v Real Valldolid

At last the long throw - Greg Halford really looked good in all his play (apart from defence!)  Kevin Doyle got a 20 minute run out so he could be fit enough to go to Ireland and get crocked on half time - and he missed a pen.  Hope he recovers his form from three years ago.  Sylvan looked a bit blunted and Andy Keogh’s spent the summer having a refresher course from Carl Cort on how to avoid jumping at the right time or challenging for the ball.  George Elokobi looked solid and Stephen Ward was probably the most active and attacking. Drew Surman spent half time exercising with Tony Daley and was tentative when he finally came on.
