Premiership Season 2009-10 Aug 2009 Sept 2009 Oct 2009 Nov 2009 Dec 2009 Jan 2010 Feb 2010 Mar 2010 Apr 2010 May 2010 pre-season
Sat 30th Jan Hull City Wolves KO 3pm Wolves were quite poor for 60 minutes of the game but then forced their way back into it. A luckily very bad clearance attempt from a poor Zubar cross gave us the first goal on 49, but 10 minutes later Zubar stupidly brought down Altidore to give Wolves target Stephen Hunt a pen. Our second equaliser came from a curling shot for Matty Jarvis' first premiership goal. WWFC Wolves twice came from behind to take a vital point from their bottom four meeting with Hull City at the KC Stadium. The draw meant that Mick McCarthy's men maintained their place just above the relegation zone. Dave Jones came in for Nenad Milijaš as the only change to the team that took a point from Liverpool in midweek as the manager decided once again on a 4-3-3 formation. (or 4-5-1) Wanderers kicked-off defending the North Stand which housed 2,500 of their supporters on a bitterly cold but cloudless afternoon on Humberside. There was a chance for Kevin Foley in the third minute he ran past Anthony Gardner in the left of the home area but his angled shot was way too high. Marcus Hahnemann easily dealt with a weak effort from Jozy Altidore but the Hull striker was then a major influence in the opening goal of the game. He latched onto a clearance and sprinted towards the Wolves goal before slipping a short pass to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who buried a low, 20-yard drive into the corner of the net. Jody Craddock glanced a header well wide following a cross from Matt Jarvis but Foley was a lot closer with a near post header that was just a yard off target following a corner from Jones. Midway through the half Stephen Ward intercepted a Stephen Hunt pass and advanced to the edge of the area before unleashing a terrific effort that flashed narrowly wide. Ronald Zubar cleared a dangerous centre from Bernard Mendy before two more corners from Jones were only cleared with difficulty by the Hull defence. Another corner, in the 25th minute, was this time taken by Jarvis. The ball was helped on by Foley and Christophe Berra, at point blank range, missed with a diving header although the defender looked to have his shirt tugged as he ran in. Michael Mancienne was both high and wide when he tried his luck from long distance, and then a well struck shot from Jarvis bounced to safety off a defender. Andy Dawson was booked for a trip on the tireless Kevin Doyle but the free-kick, taken by Jones, was cleared by the home defence. Then, just before the break, a free-kick from Jarvis floated over a crowded box and out on the far side for a goal kick. Half-Time: Hull 1 Wolves 0 Wolves pulled level four minutes after the restart thanks to a bizarre own goal. Home skipper Gardiner sliced his attempted clearance after Zubar had delivered a low cross with the ball looping over the outstretched fingers of Boaz Myhill and into the net. But just two minutes later Zubar conceded a penalty when he ran into the back of Altidore in the box as the Hull man was trying to control the ball with his back to goal. Hunt, a reported target for Wanderers in the January transfer window, hammered home the spot kick beating former Reading team-mate Hahnemann who guessed correctly in diving to his left, but had no chance of getting to the ball. Both keepers had to be at their best in the space of a few seconds - Myhill making a terrific save to turn the ball behind from Jones who had taken a return pass from Jarvis, before Hahnemann denied Altidore who had run past Foley into the Wolves area. On 67 minutes Wanderers were level once again. Foley's low cross appeared to take a deflection on its way through to Jarvis who kept his cool before slotting the ball into the far corner of the net. Play continued to swing from end to end and after Vennegoor of Hesselink had glanced a header wide from a Hunt free-kick, Foley was just off the mark with a ferocious shot from the tightest of angles. Hahnemann had to back-peddle and tip over a swerving cross from Mendy then, deep into stoppage time, George Boateng went into the book for a late challenge on Foley 25-yards out from Myhill's goal. With everyone expecting Jones to take a shot, he instead switched the ball wide to Foley on the overlap. He fired a low cross into the goalmouth and Zubar pushed it back into the path of Mujangi Bia who had just come on in place of Jarvis. The youngster took aim and it looked like he was going to hit a late winner but Myhill managed to knock the ball away ensuring that the points were going to be shared. Hull: Myhill, Dawson, Gardner (capt), McShane, Altidore (Zaki 69), Hunt, Mendy (Garcia 80), Mouyokolo, Boateng, Vennegoor of Hesselink, Cairney. Unused subs: Fagan, Barmby, Geovanni, Duke, Kilbane.Bookings: Dawson (43 - foul), Boateng (90 - foul) Wolves: Hahnemann, Zubar, Ward (Stearman 90), Mancienne, Craddock, Berra, Foley (Guedioura 90), Henry (capt), Doyle, Jones, Jarvis (Mujangi Bia 90). Unused subs: Hennessey, Ebanks-Blake, Vokes, Milijaš. Referee: M. Dean. Attendance: 24,957. Beeb Wolves twice came from a goal down to earn a point at Hull in an unexpectedly entertaining relegation tussle. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's fine strike gave Hull an early lead but Anthony Gardner let the visitors back in the contest with a comical own-goal. Stephen Hunt coolly slotted a penalty after a clumsy foul from Ronald Zubar to restore Hull's fragile lead. But Matthew Jarvis then converted Kevin Foley's cross to ensure the home supporters left frustrated. Wolves had scored just 17 times in the league before Saturday's encounter at the KC Stadium, so it was no surprise that they should start off concentrating solely on defence, with Kevin Doyle their only striker. But that tactic did not work for long. Vennegoor of Hesselink, who has been used mainly as a substitute by Phil Brown since signing for Hull last September, opened the scoring with a fine left-footed drive from about 20 yards after Jozy Altidore had held off two defenders strongly before playing in the Dutchman.

Tue 26th Jan Wolves 0 Liverpool 0 KO 7.45pm A really hard fought draw between two not very good teams. Liverpool were very disappointing - Gerrard only had one sparkling move but overran the ball on the edge of the box. Craddock put in one of his best displays but in reality our man of the match was Karl Henry who together with "midfield enforcer" Michael Mancienne shackled the Liverpool stars. Even Maschereno didn't show much aggression, while new "star" Maxi Rodriguez would give Jurgen Klinsmann a good run for his money in the diving stakes. Dirk Kuyt ran a round a lot for half an hour and then disappeared. Marcus had one interesting save to make from a looped "shot". Mick's ludicrous post match comment that Doyler put in the best centre forward performance ever at Molineux caused great amusement even to Doyler (He worked very hard, lef the line, held the ball and had one shot off goal over the top and a good chance from a great cross from Jarvis). Bet Bully cringed. Wol Liverpool kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and there was a moment of danger after just a minute as Alberto Riera flashed a near post header across the face of goal from Steven Gerrard's corner. Dirk Kuyt looked on to test Marcus Hahnemann from the 18-yard line but Jody Craddock had spotted the danger and he blocked at the expense of a corner. In the 14th minute Matt Jarvis beat Jamie Carragher on the left but Emiliano Insua cleared at the near post as Karl Henry waited behind him for a slip. Jarvis was accidentally caught Half
Three minutes after the resumption, a hopeful flick from Riera had Hahnemann running back towards his goal. He knocked the ball up into the air and then caught it as it dropped. The keeper then had to race from his area to boot the ball clear after the Liverpool forwards threatened to latch on to an underhit back pass from Stephen Ward. There was a chance for Henry when he chested the ball down on the edge of the area. He got a shot in but the ball hit a defender and then bounced away off Foley. Then Christophe Berra nodded down to Doyle who worked a shooting position for himself before firing over the bar from 20-yards. A minute later Pepe Reina comfortably saved a header from Doyle after Zubar had crossed from the right. On the hour mark Doyle headed on to the edge of the box where Foley and Insua tussled for the ball which broke for t Wolves: Hahnemann, Zubar, Ward, Milijaš (Jones 73), Craddock, Berra, Foley, Mancienne, Henry (capt), Doyle, Jarvis (Guedioura 89). Sat 23rd Jan/Sun24th FA Cup 4th round Wolves v Crystal Palace 3pm
Sammy Vokes made a lively return to the starting line up, and had a couple of chances, while Ronnie Zubar scored the goal of the round on his return and Dave Jones made his best contribution i Wolves 2 (Jones 37, Zubar 84) Crystal Palace 2 (Lee 3, Ambrose 49) Wolves face a trip to south London after twice coming back from a goal down to earn a draw against Championship side Crystal Palace in a hard fought FA Cup tie at Molineux. Mick McCarthy rang the changes for the game - seven in all with just Karl Henry, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Kevin Foley and Michael Mancienne retaining their starting places. Palace kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and they took the lead in just the third minute. Wolves had a chance after 45 seconds as Sam Vokes held off a challenge from Johannes Ertl before hitting an angled shot that was smothered by Julian Speroni. The visitors won a corner moments later and from Darren Ambrose's kick Alan Lee rose to plant a header which appeared to get a touch from Wayne Hennessey and the bar before it went over the line. It could have been two after Victor Moses picked out Ambrose who had clear sight of goal but his shot from just inside the area well taken by Hennessey. A nasty looking head injury to Claude Davis then saw the game held up for five minutes. The defender was involved in an accidental clash of heads with Vokes, and he fell face down and not moving. Staff from both benches gathered round and there was obvious concern before Davis was finally stretchered off. It was later revealed that he had suffered mouth and shoulder injuries but wasn't detained in hospital whilst Vokes carried on after having five stitches put in a head wound. From the restart Ertl had to head behind as Ebanks-Blake threatened but Dave Jones's corner was too high and it went out on the far side for a goal-kick. Speroni cut out a low cross from George Elokobi at the feet of Ebanks-Blake before Ronald Zubar fired high over the bar after Vokes had taken the ball out of defence and pushed it forwards to the French defender. On the half-hour mark Jones won possession 35-yards out from the Palace goal. He slipped a pass to Vokes and ran forward to take a return but Speroni dived to save his shot. Two minutes later Vokes and Jones combined again with the latter named forcing another save from the Palace keeper. A lovely touch from Andy Surman from Foley's pass fell into the path of Ebanks-Blake but he failed to spot the unmarked Henry to his left and shot over the bar from 25-yards out. Whilst n The midfielder didn't hesitate and he hooked the ball into the corner of the net from the 18-yard line. Four minutes later Speroni dived to hold onto a 20-yard volley from Jones and then, in stoppage time of which there was six minutes, Vokes was way too high with a shot on the turn from just outside the box. Half-Time: Wolves 1 Palace 1 Palace regained the advantage in the 49th minute after Christophe Berra was penalised for a pull on Lee and from 25-yards, Ambrose found t There was a chance for Surman on the edge of the box but he scuffed his shot and the ball trickled through to Speroni. In the 63rd minute Wolves made a double change with Kevin Doyle replacing Ebanks-Blake and new boy Bia Mujangi taking the place of Surman. And with his first touch Doyle almost levelled matters. Jones lifted a free-kick into the area and Doyle rose to send a header crashing against the underside of the bar. Mancienne then went on an enterprising run before slipping a pass to Jones who fired narrowly over with a long range effort. Stephen Ward replaced Elokobi for the final stages as Wolves began to pile on the pressure and Shaun Derry had to boot the ball over his own bar to try and relieve the pressure. From the corner, taken by Jones, Vokes flicked the From another Jones corner Zubar, at the back post, floated in a header which was cleared off the line by Derry. But, Wolves, and Zubar, wouldn't be denied and an equaliser arrived in spectacular fashion six minutes from the end. Foley's cross from the left was met by Zubar on the volley and he scored with a tremendous effort that flashed past Speroni (pictured). Almost immediately Derry tested Hennessey with a low shot from outside the area. But Wolves were soon back sniffing for a late winner and Henry had a shot deflected to Speroni before Zubar fired over the far angle from the right of the Palace area. In stoppage time Ambrose drove wide after being set up by Andrew, and Mujangi got underneath the ball and lifted it over after he met a cross from Foley. SUBS: Lawrence, Djilahi, Comley, Andrews, Carle. 0: Handshakes between the teams, between the former Barnsley team-mates ~Mick McCarthy and Neil Warnock, and we're off and running. 1: 47 seconds on the clock and first chance for Wolves. Vokes holds off Ertl with a powerful run and gets a shot in from an acute angle which is saved by Speroni. 2: Palace respond immediately with Ambrose breaking into the box only to be denied by a tackle from Elokobi. 3: GOAL: 0-1: Palace take the lead from a corner. Flag kick comes in and Lee converts. 9: Not the best start for Wolves and the game hasn't really settled after the Palace opener. Butterfield off temporarily for treatment to a cut. 12: Palace win a free kick after Moses is challenged by Zubar and Elokobi. Put into the box and Lee heads goalwards with Mancienne clearing the danger with an acrobatic overhead kick. 14: Bit of Wolves pressure with a couple of crosses into the box but the Palace defence handles them well. 16: Another good chance for Palace. Moses threads the ball through for Ambrose who finds space to shoot, his effort saved comfortably by Hennessey. 17: Stoppage as Vokes and Davis go up for a header and Davis stays down. 22: Doesn't look good for Davis who is attended to by the medical staff from both teams. A five minute stoppage as he is stretchered off to a round of applause from both sets of supporters. Lawrence is on in his place. 23: Wolves win a corner straight from the restart and while Jones's delivery is good it's also slightly too deep and Berra is unable to reach it at the back post. 25: Elokobi now breaks purposefully to the byline and pulls back a decent ball but Speroni takes it well. 28: Good break from Vokes who then finds Zubar down the right. But the defender takes a rather ambitious aim at goal from the right flank and the ball is high and wide. 29: Crowd applause for Geoffrey Mujangi Bia as he warms up on the touchline. Not much else to shout about as yet. 30: Good work from Jones sets up a chance. The midfielder advances, exchanges passes with Vokes and then gets a shot away from inside a crowd of bodies which Speroni grabs to his right. 31: Palace back on the attack and Hennessey comes to claim a low Moses centre. 32: Same two Wolves players involved again as Vokes lays off to Jones whose low shot is taken by Speroni. 33: Decent break from Wolves again ends with a nice touch from Surman setting up Ebanks-Blake to try his luck from distance and firing over. Henry was breaking down the left though and was hoping for a pass. 37: GOAL: JONES 1-1. Wolves have improved in recent minutes and get their response. After a free kick Zubar makes good strides down the right and pulls it back to Foley whose cross to the back post is headed back by Surman. It's a difficult chance for Jones with the ball high up but he produces a neat half volley into the bottom corner. Palace boss Warnock is incensed and remonstrates with the fourth official as a result of not being happy with the initial free kick award. Meanwhile that's the first FA Cup goal of Jones's career. 41: Jones has been Wolves' brightest influence and gets another decent shot away from just outside the area, drawing a save out of Speroni. 43: Warnock not been happy about a few of the refereeing decisions from Chris Foy and now the Wolves fans join him! Ebanks-Blake clearly held back by Lawrence as he tries to get onto a Vokes pass but nothing given. Assistant could have helped the referee out there. 45: Moses wins a foul, to ironic applause from Warnock, in a dangerous position 30 yards out. Ambrose steps up but his free kick flies wide of the target. 45+1: Vokes on the turn but the ball takes a bobble and the shot flies over. Six minutes of injury time called. 45+4: Hennessey comes out well to punch clear a corner and then Wolves win a flag kick at the other end which is scrambled away. 45+5: Palace chances as N'Diaye gets a free header to Danns' cross but his effort loops over the bar. HALF TIME: WOLVES 1-1 PALACE 46: Back underway. 49: GOAL: AMBROSE 1-2. Palace score within the first few minutes once again. Free kick from outside the area and Ambrose steps up with a curling low effort into the bottom corner. 53: Half a chance for Wolves as Henry gets on the end of Foley's deep cross with a left foot shot which is blocked by Danns. 56: Wolves trying to hit back with Surman getting in a low shot but not as much power as he would have liked and Speroni makes the save. 58: An inswinging Jones corner causes some nerves in the Palace area and it appears to come off Lee last before the ball is cleared. 60: Another Jones corner is delivered with menace but flies across the goalmouth without anyone getting a touch. 62: N'Diaye fires well over for Palace. 63: Double change for Wolves with Doyle and debutant Mujangi on for Ebanks-Blake and Surman. 64: And Doyle almost levels with his first touch, or head! Meets Jones's free kick and the ball bounces agonisingly back off the underside of the bar. 66: First touch for Mujangi who gets in a decent low cross which Vokes controls well before being crowded out. 70: Jones in space again centrally but his shot is over the bar. 71: Ball worked out to Mujangi who sends in a promising right wing cross which flies out of play with no one able to get on the end of it. 72: Final change for Wolves, Ward for Elokobi. 76: Mujangi's harassing wins Wolves a corner but again the Palace defence do their job and the ball is cleared. 78: Change for Palace with Andrew on for Lee. 81: Good run from Doyle down the inside left channel is followed by a low cross put behind by Derry. Jones whips in the flag kick, Vokes flicks towards goal and Berra is unable to convert from close range, putting the chance over the bar. 83: Wolves mounting some pressure with another Jones corner headed goalwards by Zubar and off his own line by Derry for another flag kick. This one put behind by N'Diaye and Jones switches flanks to have another go. 84: This time Jones's corner is cleared. 84: GOAL: ZUBAR 2-2. And what a goal that is! Ball breaks to the right hand side and Zubar slams a superb strike into the top corner. 85: Palace straight back on the attack with a low drive from Derry gathered by Hennessey at the second attempt. 87: Crowd today is 14, 449. 88: Henry's shot deflected but it's still comfortable save from Speroni. 90: Zubar in the mood now. Turns inside on the right and hits a left foot shot well over. 90: Three minutes added time to follow. 90+2: It's Palace who produce a good chance with Andrew laying off for Ambrose who prods his left foot shot wide. 90+2: Wolves respond. Mujangi getting underneath Foley's pass and putting it over. FULL TIME: WOLVES 2-2 PALACE
Sat 16th Jan Wolves 0 Wigan 2 3pm Stupid - the only term for Stearman's hand on McCarthy in the box to give away a penalty and get sent off. Rubbish - the way the team played after the sending off; atrocious - the way the team performed after Wigan's second goal. Rude - only man-of-the-match Marcus Hahnemann took the trouble to acknowledge the crowd while the rest of them sloped off the pitch - not even being treated to booing as most of the fans were long gone. Many matches change in the Premier League in the last 15 minutes - but no chance when the team has already given up. Wolves 0 Wigan Athletic 2 (McCarthy 60, N'Zogbia 73) The atmosphere at ~Molineux was as gloomy as the weather after Wolves had slipped to their sixth home League defeat of the season with Wigan scoring two without reply against a lacklustre home side. But the game wasn't without its controversial incidents and referee Howard Webb, the official who missed a blatant penalty offence when Portmouth visited ~Molineux in October, once again did little to endear himself to home support. ~Mick McCarthy had made just two changes to the team that started the FA Cup tie at Tranmere. Marcus Hahnemann returned in goal in place of ~Wayne Hennessey, who was named as a substitute, and Kevin Doyle came in for Chris Iwelumo who also took a place on the bench. Wigan kicked-off attacking the North Bank end but the first threats came from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Doyle but both overhit crosses from the right side of the Wigan area. Then Paul Scharner's foul on Nenad Milijaš just outside the 'D' presented the Serb with a chance from the resultant free-kick but his effort deflected off the defensive wall flying two yards wide. An underhit backpass by ~Jody Craddock let Hugo Rodallega in but Hahnemann had spotted the danger and he managed to boot the ball away before the Columbian striker could capitalise. Craddock then blocked a drive from Charles N'Zogbia who had cut into the box and slipped past ~Stephen Ward before shooting. Richard Stearman, for a late challenge on Scharner, and then Hendry Thomas for a foul on Ward, were both booked within a few seconds of one another. A poor pass from Kevin Foley allowed N'Zogbia the chance of a shot at goal but Hahnemann made a smart save at the expense of a corner. Hahnemann then saved a low, 25-yard free-kick from Thomas clutching onto the ball at the second attempt before Wanderers had the chance of taking a 19th minute lead. Milijaš slipped a superb ball through a crowded box to Ebanks-Blake but, with only Chris Kirkland to beat, his shot went inches wide. Mario Melchiot tripped Matt Jarvis just to the left of the Wigan box but the winger's free-kick drifted over everyone and out for a goalkick on the far side. Ebanks-Blake did well to get his head to Ward's 29th minute cross but his effort brushed the side netting as it went behind before Rodallega was thwarted by a combination of Hahnemann and Michael Mancienne when he homed in on a long clearance. The American keeper then made a good save from Rodallega who made the most of Mancienne failing to get to grips with a bouncing ball. Luck was on Wolves' side when Rodallega hit a 25-yard shot that hit the inside of the post and bounced away before being cleared by a defender. In the 38th minute Craddock was too high with a first time shot after the ball broke to him following a failed scissors kick attempt from Doyle. The game erupted in stoppage time when Stearman was sent off after conceding a penalty. There didn't seem to be any danger as the defender and James McCarthy chased Mancienne's attempted clearance which looked to be going out for a corner. But Stearman tugged at McCarthy's shirt and the referee immediately pointed to the spot before waving a second yellow at the Wolves man. It was a few seconds before the referee appeared to realise that he had already booked Stearman, and he then sent him off. Rodallega took the spot kick but Hahnemann dived to his right to pull off a tremendous save. The loose ball ran to Scharner who somehow screwed the ball wide - injuring himself in the process. Half-Time: Wolves 0 Wigan 0 Dave Jones replaced Jarvis at the start of the second-half which was eight minutes old when Rodallega lashed a first time shot into Hahnemann's arms after N'Zogbia's low cross took a deflection. Milijaš was well off target with a long distance effort before Wigan moved into a fortuitous lead on the hour mark. N'Zogbia shot was blocked and Rodallega's follow up was also blocked, by Hahnemann. But the ball ran into the path of McCartney who would, in all probability, have had his shooting chance denied by Jones. But the midfielder's path to the ball was blocked by the referee - who had already incurred the wrath of the crowd following the sending off and some curious decisions. McCarthy had a free run at the ball and he made no mistake scoring with a low shot. The numbers on the field were evened up midway through the half when Thomas was shown a second yellow after clattering into Ward on the touchline. Iwelumo went on in place of Ebanks-Blake before ~Karl Henry was yellow carded for a foul on Jordi Gomez. There could be no arguing with Wigan's second goal, in the 73rd minute. Mancienne and Rodallega were tussling for the ball on the edge of the home area when N'Zogbia nipped in to take possession. He ran past Craddock before scoring with a shot that went in off the post. Kirkland turned an Iwelumo volley around the post and, after a final Wolves change saw Andy Surman replacing Milijaš, the keeper held a Craddock header following a Foley cross. Ward just failed to get a foot to the ball when a Surman corner travelled through the six-yard box, and the Irish defender was booked a minute later for pulling back N'Zogbia. More bookings followed - Doyle for a foul on N'Zogbia and Gomez for a challenge on Doyle. Then, deep into stoppage time, Hahnemann confirmed his Man of the Match status by saving from Rodallega who had run unchallenged from the centre circle. Wolves: Hahnemann, Foley, Ward, Milijaš (Surman 82), Mancienne, Craddock, Stearman, Henry (capt), Doyle, Ebanks-Blake (Iwelumo 68), Jarvis (Jones 45). Unused subs: Hennessey, Elokobi, Berra, Vokes. Unused subs: Amaya, Watson, Scotland, Stojkovic. Bookings: Thomas (13, 67 - fouls), N'Zogbia (73 - overcelebrating goal), Gomez (90 - foul). Sending-Off: Thomas (67 - two bookable offences). Sun 10th Jan West Ham Wolves 1.30pm on SKY Match Postponed Meanwhile Mick was interviewed by Martin Samuel of the Mail... Mick: don’t dare question my integrity here or here text on line or here Sun Jan 3rd 2010 FA Cup 3rd Round 18:15pm Tranmere Rovers 0 Wolves 1 live on www.thefa.com/fatv here Tranmere 0 - 1 Wolves Jarvis (78) Jarvo eventually made up for some glaring misses by putting away the winner, after almost 30 minutes of incessant Wolves pressure, and two outstanding saves from Baggie-on-loan Luke Daniels denying SEB. Sammy Vokes, returning from Leeds, had a great chance which the defense headed away, and Wolves were indebted to Wayne for three good saves and several confident takes. Tranmere Rovers 0 Wolves 1 (Jarvis 77) It took a late goal from Matt Jarvis to see off plucky Tranmere Rovers and secure Wolves' place in the fourth round of the FA Cup when they will face Crystal Palace at ~Molineux. Struggling in the relegation zone of League One, the Merseyside team made Wanderers fight all the way on what was a difficult, rock hard surface. ~Mick McCarthy made six changes to the side that had started against Manchester City including ~Wayne Hennessey who made his first appearance in goal since the defeat at Chelsea in November. On a freezing Merseyside evening Rovers kicked-off attacking the away end of the ground that housed over a 1,000 travelling supporters. The only goal attempt in the opening quarter of an hour fell to Gareth Edds whose 20-yard drive was comfortably fielded by Hennessey after Shaleum Logan's long throw into the box had only been half cleared. Wolves won the first corner of the contest in the 17th minute but Matt Jarvis's kick was punched clear by home keeper Luke Daniels. Two other Jarvis corners came to nothing before the game finally burst into life as Rovers created three chances within as many minutes. Ian Goodison found John Welsh who tested Hennessey with a first time shot from the edge of the box. Then the keeper had to be at his athletic best as he turned a low shot from Welsh around the post. But he was beaten by Ian Thomas-Moore's 35th minute header and it took a goalline clearance from Kevin Foley to maintain parity. A minute later Richard Stearman's cross was flicked on by Chris Iwelumo but Jarvis, under pressure from Logan, sidefooted wide from in front of goal. Half-Time: Rovers 0 Wolves 0 Both sides won corners in the opening minutes of the new half but they all proved to be fruitless. With 54 minutes gone it took a world class save from Daniels to deny Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. The striker looked a certain scorer as he powered a header goalwards following a cross from Stearman but Daniels somehow got his fingertips to the ball to turn it aside. The Tranmere stopper then made a more routine save from Ebanks-Blake who attempted an overhead kick from 18-yards out. Terry Gornell looked fortunate not to be penalised for a feet first challenge on Hennessey as the pair went for a through pass. The loose ball broke kindly for the home striker but, with the goal at his mercy, he fired hurriedly into the side netting from an angle. Sam Vokes, just back from a lengthy loan spell at Leeds, was sent on in place of Iwelumo just before Jarvis fired Wolves into a 77th minute lead. A superb through ball from Nenad Milijaš carved open the home defence and Jarvis was in like a flash to drive right-footed past Daniels. Milijaš then became the only man to be booked in the game when he was late with a challenge on Welsh. From Paul McLaren's 86th minute corner the Wolves defence struggled to clear and Hennessey had to block at close range from Craig Curran. Tranmere piled on the pressure as the game neared its conclusion but the visiting rearguard held firm with Hennessey easily saving a long range shot from Logan just on the final whistle.
